Today on The Dr. Oz Show, the health expert will be revealing his ‘ultimate longevity grocery list’. Foods that make the list are major disease fighters and can help improve quality of life, something we can all use on our next run to the grocery or farmers market! Registered Dietitian, Ellie Krieger of the Food Network, will also be appearing on the show to help explain the benefits of these super foods.
Here are the delicious and nutritious, foods that make the list:
Dr. Oz suggests four servings of vegetables a day, which should include disease fighters jicama, a great addition to a salad, kale, and sweet potatoes. Six servings of grain are suggested, but not your average white bread; Longevity grains include teff, millet, and amaranth. Apples, mangoes, and dates all make the list for three servings a day of fruit while the protein category, also three servings, includes fish, brazil nuts, and tofu. Dr. Oz suggests two servings of dairy per day, especially feta cheese, Greek yogurt (a personal favorite!), and buttermilk. Just think of the possibilities for meals with these ingredients!
Be sure to tune in May 26th to the show and take notes for your next shopping trip. By bringing a list of healthy foods like these to pick up, you are less likely to stray and put processed, or ‘junk’ foods, in your basket. Healthy grocery shopping also stocks your kitchen with nutrient dense foods, like kale or Greek yogurt, for you and your family. Make it your goal to try one food from each category from Dr. Oz’s list on your next trip to the store. Expanding your food diversity is great, especially when the foods are ultimate longevity foods!

It sounds like it’s going to be a very informative episode. One way of making healthy grocery shopping easier is to use the NuVal system. NuVal was developed by a panel of scientific experts who created an algorithm to score foods. The algorithm incorporates nutrients that are both beneficial and detrimental to one’s health, the quality of the macronutrients, and the relationship of nutrients to disease. Scores range from 1 to 100, the higher score, the better the nutrition. An example of NuVal scoring for Dr. Oz’s grocery list would be a 91 for plain Greek yogurt, 87 for an Alaskan Salmon fillet, and 93 for mangoes. If you are a consistent viewer of the Dr. Oz show you may have seen Dr. David Katz as one of his guests. Dr. Katz is the inventor of the NuVal scoring system! Some stores that have implemented NuVal include Price Chopper, Hy-vee, Meijer, United Supermarkets, and a Kroger test in the Lexington, KY market. Price and nutrition comparisons can also be done because the NuVal score is listed on the price tag.
