Product Review: New Fiber One Yoplait Yogurt

A nice PR woman named Erin asked me to try the new fiber one yogurt and write a review. She offered to send me a free 6-pack of yogurt to try (little did she know I already saw it in the grocery store and swooped up the key lime pie / vanilla 6-pack). Want a coupon? Visit this website to print one.

Here’s the review.

What’s in it???

Okay, so it’s called Fiber One Yogurt. It’s not hard to figure out that it has fiber. But if I know you, you want more information than that. The fiber in the yogurt comes from inulin, a soluble fiber that occurs naturally in foods such as apples, asparagus and artichokes (and many, many more – roughly 36,000 plant species). That’s inulin – not the glucose hormone insulin.

Inulin is used in the food industry, usually in the form of chicory root extract. This is the ingredient used in the Fiber One yogurt. All soluble fibers act the same way once you eat them. They travel through the digestive system virtually untouched until they reach the colon – this is right before the “poop chute” where the body reabsorbs water and electrolytes. Here, inulin is partially digested by healthy gut bacteria (sometimes called flora). This is essentially food for healthy gut bacteria so inulin promotes their growth and strength. Once partially digested, it forms a gel-like substance that helps “everything come out OK”. The bacteria produce carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and maybe some methane gas. This is nothing special to the yogurt. It is how our bodies metabolize all inulin, including fruits and vegetables. If you overdo it on inulin you could experience some gas and bloating. It’s an individual thing so the only way to know your reaction is to try it. A little gas is fine and totally normal. It’s only a problem if it becomes uncomfortable to you.

Fiber one yogurts have 5g of inulin. As a comparison, a cup of asparagus has about 3 grams. It is recommended that healthy individuals get 25-35 grams total fiber (soluble and insoluble) per day. If you have a special low fiber or low residue diet for a health condition, then it’s doctors orders for you.

Other than the inulin, the yogurt has typical ingredients of the light yoplait yogurt, including aspartame and high fructose corn syrup.

Thoughts on Taste

You can’t taste the inulin at all. So, if you normally like yoplait yogurt, chances are you will like the Fiber One yoplait. I liked it. I thought the key lime had just the right combo of sweet and tang. The vanilla was good in the morning mixed in with my oatmeal. If you don’t normally do yogurt, this may be a good one to try. It is a small size and it is very sweet.

Other Pros

I liked the small size and convenient packaging. I usually crave something sweet after lunch and dinner. This is a great snack that has only 80 calories and some calcium. Even better, the inulin has been shown to enhance calcium absorption. It has also been shown to help lower cholesterol because it binds cholesterol in the colon (remember it’s a gummy substance) and it carries it out of the body when you go #2.

Potential Cons

Dietary preferences and food allergies are the only cons I can think of for this product. Some people have dietary fructose intolerance (like lactose intolerance). You need to be tested and diagnosed with the condition by a doctor, usually a hydrogen breath test. If you have this condition, then you already know the HFCS and inulin would cause a problem. I know people who get migrane headaches and avoid artificial sweeteners. If that’s you, then this product probably won’t work either.

Final Word

I think this is a good, convenient solution to bumping up your fiber intake and enjoy a snack at the same time. I recommend trying to add your favorite fruits, nuts or a combination of both to keep it interesting. A summer smoothie might be nice too.

Don’t let me have the last word. If you tried it, let the world know what you think.

  1. Please don’t eat anything with aspartame…

    Here’s why.

    Thanks.

  2. I too just saw this yogurt and snatched it up on March 5th. I got the same combo pack as described here, but no free peach! In anycase, I’ve tasted both flavors and compared to other brands without the extra fiber, this one is just as delish! Anyways to get in extra fiber & calcium, for me, is a bonus!! And the cost of the combo pack compared to other combo packs was right on par!!

  3. I bought it yesterday, peach and vanilla. I tried both and love both. It tastes great and because of the fiber, fills me up more than regular yogurt.

  4. Thanks Rebecca,

I have tried a pack and gas and bloating are just the biggest problems with the product. I like the high fiber content, it keeps hunger under control.

I would definitely recommend this product to patients, the calcium, fiber, and protein outweigh the discomfort that the gas can bring.

  6. DoN’t Eat anything with aspartame or High fructose corn syrup.

This product sounds bogus to me! Here have some fiber but have some chemicals, oh and btw have some sweetner that your body doesn;t know hot to digest that will turn to fat right away- yep that’s right, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. It’s in EVERYTHING.

Why can’t companies sweeten with fruit sugars or honey instead?

Oh. Right that would cost too much.

  7. I would like to send you samples of the Super High Fiber for you to try. Where can I mail them to? Can you please write a review on the Super High Fiber after you tried it?

I’m an independent marketing representative for this product.

Your attention to my request will be very much appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Betty Lopez

  8. I liked the small size and convenient packaging.

  9. Figured out after one try that these little yogurts were the source of my EXTREME bloating and painful cramping and gas. I ate ONE around lunchtime, and at nearly ten pm, Im still suffering. No thanks.

    • I too ended up with painful gas and bloating with the exception that mine lasted all night, It’s now the next morning and I’m finally able to slowly eat a bowl of oatmeal. I couldn’t even eat dinner last night! It was awful. No more Fiber One for me.

  10. Tried the Fiber One yogurt in peach and vanilla, really enjoyed both. My husband even likes them!! As for the fiber…its the best thing I have found in a long time.

I tried to print the coupons and the site wont allow. Thanks, Tammy

  11. well i love the taste, i do not like the fact that high fructose corn syrup is the second ingredient, but the taste is great, the fiber is wonderful, and yes it will give you gas, make your stomach make noise, but the fiber i am going to keep using it and see if that goes away

  12. You’ll be farting all night long.

  13. I just tried my second serving of this yogurt. I assume the extreme sweetness is because of the high fructose corn syrup. After eating it at 6:pm I had severe acid reflux all night and far into the nest day. I probably will not use it after I finish the ones already purchased. Not worth the discomfort and it’s Much too sweet for good taste.

  14. it is great! i love all fiber one products. you would never of guessed that it was packed full of fiber!

  15. Just want to let everyone know that I had a severe allergic reaction to this product. Had to call 911 cause I could not breath and lost my voice completely. Still trying to get my voice back frrom yesterday. I am thinking it was either the high fructose or the chickory. Will never eat this again. No thanks!

  16. Are you sure it was this product? If it were the HFCS then you would have had a reaction with ANY HFCS product… or product with fructose (including fruit).

What did the doctor tell you? If you had a serious reaction you need to find out what you are actually allergic to so you can avoid it. Allergic reactions are serious and can be life threatening. You may need something like an Epi Pen to keep with you.

I would visit the FAAN (food allergy and anaphylaxis) website.

    • High Fructose Corn Syrup is not the same as Fructose in fruit. HFCS is a chemical concoction that no longer resembles any type of natural food. So, someone could have a reaction to HFCS and be fine with fruit..since they are not the same thing. Now, nobody mentioned the neurotoxin aspartame….People, wake up and realized that Big Food is slowing poisoning you…stick with what nature created…and your body will reward you will great health.

  17. I ate one 4 oz. cup on various days, not in a row. That small amount gave me diahrrea, cramps and the worst smelling gas every time I ate it. (Took me a couple of days to figure out the pattern, thought it was hormones and/or stress at first). I can eat other high fiber foods like beans and whole grains with none of these symptoms except maybe a touch more gas, so it’s the Fiber One.

  18. I love the taste of Yoplait Yogurt but foolishly did not read the label before purchasing. I can’t believe a product that is advertised to be healthy would contain High Fructose Corn Syrup! Now I have 10 containers in my fridge that I will have to throw out. How disappointing! And the Fiber One of course, isn’t the only Yoplait Yogurt with this disgusting ingredient.

  19. Where can I find this yogurt in a larger tub size like I can yoplait? Love the product but would be more economic in larger size.

  20. Oh, my gosh, I am glad I am not the only one who had horrific side effects from this!
–I will not go into detail, let’s just say this is my only day off this week, and I cannot leave the house, for fear of not being near a bathroom! Thank God I am not at work, I am a driver and go for long stretches w/o any available bathrooms!!!!
    Sorry to gross everyone out!

  21. OMG! I honestly cannot believe that a small container of yogurt would do this, thats ridiculous. Of course if you tried to get your 25-30 grams of fiber just from the yogurt maybe…but that just makes you stupid. I give this daily to my daughter who was always constipated and now she has no problems. Not that it CANT make someone have the runs…but its doubtful when eaten in moderation the way it was intended. I’m a RN of 20 years so I know what I’m talking about.

    • You give your child Aspartame which is a neurotoxin…do your homework and quit giving this poison to your child. Read up on Aspartic acid…which is used to make aspartame…also, aspartame turns into formic acid and formeldahyde in the brain…Wake up people!

  22. Tamie: You may not believe me either, but I ate my very first Fiber One 4 oz container of peach yogurt today. Two hours later I began to suffer excrusiating abdominal pain, bloating, cramps and gas. This has been going on for a few hours and has been so painful, I’ve been in bed.

I won’t touch this product again.

  23. Personally I think they should yank this product off the shelves and discontinue it – there are more bad reports on it then good and that ought to tell you something. No product should have asparte or high fructose corn syrup in it – I had a horrible experience with this and never ever will buy it again. Sorry – but if you want something natural – you should try Dannon All Nutural Yogurt – at least it’s natural for sure.

  24. I have started eating this several weeks ago. I normally eat yogurt every morning with some cereal or toast.

Since I have started eating this I have not been hungry at work during the morning. I have been eating way less for lunch and dinner. I have lost 6 pounds in 3 weeks and I haven’t even been trying.

Awesome, I will keep eating this everyday!

  25. How dumb do you think we are, 0 fat but the second ingredient is
HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, BOOOOO! AND HOW MANY GRAMS OF FIBER, 3 DUH!

  26. Cultured Pasteurized Grade A Nonfat Milk, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Chicory Root Extract (Inulin), Modified Corn Starch, Whey Protein Concentrate, Kosher Gelatin, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Citric Acid, Aspartame (Phenylketonurics: Contains Phenylalanine), Potassium Sorbate Added to Maintain Freshness, Colored with Carmine, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3. Contains Active Yogurt …

Let’s see…HFCS…we all know the liver can’t metabolize this properly and leads to obesity…
Modified Corn Starch (This is made from genetically modiefied corn people! It is MSG and an excitoxin which kills your brain cells….Also lurking is the preservative potassium sorbate and (brace yourself) carmine – a dye made from dried and ground female bodies of the Dactylopius coccus costa (Coccus cacti L.) insect! YUM!!!!! Also, Vitamin A ACETATE is more than likely a synthetic version…gotta watch those profits! Whey Protein concentrate may also contain MSG…of course the FDA made it nice for food companies that they don’t have to tell you it’s MSG…as long as it contains less than 98%… And lastly, MSG is what makes the other crap ingredients taste good…I don’t know about you, but I would like the food to taste good naturally and not have to be chemically altered to make me think I like it….When you start eliminating MSG from you diet…you will go through withdrawl…like an addict….

  27. and let’s not forget the neurotoxin aspartame, with it’s 10% methanol that breaks down to formic acid and formaldehyde in the body….yes, the carcinogen formeldahyde…Open up!

  29. My mother tried fiber one for the advertised benefits but it didn’t work for her. The only thing she got was an allergic reaction that made her mouth and throat feel like she had swallowed acid. My dad tried it also and had the same problem. They threw the remainder in the garbage. She will never try this product again.
