As a card carrying list maker, I have to smile at this new book called “milk eggs vodka” – a book of grocery lists that have been lost and recompiled for our reading pleasure – and perhaps education about purchasing behavior of consumers. I am sure one of my lost shopping lists has made it in that book! There are just too many of them floating around.
I find it interesting (but not surprising) to read in this book review that the lists kids requested barely resemble real food. So much is invested in the marketing of snack foods, its no wonder kids ask for specific brands. For those looking for a checklist to make your grocery list, you can actually get one at http://www.grocerylists.org/. Just make sure that you add “seek help” to that list you make.
Joking aside, I strongly suggest making a grocery list as a strategy for sticking to your diet plan. Making a grocery list (and sticking to it) will curb those spontaneous purchases that just happen to appear in your grocery cart. It also means you took time to think about what you want to eat, how it is prepared, and what other ingredients you need.
Planning your meals in advance is so important to eating healthy. One of the main reasons people order pizza, chinese food, or other take-out is they don’t have anything healthy on hand that can be made in a flash. Take the time upfront to plan your healthy, quick meals and shop from a grocery list. I guarantee you won’t get stuck in a “take out menu nightmare” as often.
